With nearly two decades of experience in turf care, Robson Holland has built a career shaped by dedication, adaptability and a deep understanding of natural surfaces. His journey through the industry from golf courses to professional football offers a unique perspective on the challenges and rewards of modern grounds management.
Robson’s story begins early. Leaving school at just 15, he stepped straight into the world of golf course maintenance. That foundation led him into landscape management before progressing into high-performance sports environments, including horse racing at Nottingham and football roles with organisations such as the The Football Association and Derby County.

Today, he finds himself back where it all came together—working with Burton Albion, having returned ahead of the most recent season. For Robson, it’s a full-circle moment that reflects both his growth and his loyalty to the role.
Throughout his career, one constant has remained: his reliance on Dennis Mowers. Even during his early days in golf, the brand made an impression.

“It's just what I know,” Robson explains. “The quality of cut and the level of service you get from Dennis is like no other.” That trust has carried through every stage of his career. While some may experiment with alternatives, Robson remains firm- he sees no reason to change. For him, Dennis machinery represents reliability, consistency and performance at the highest level.

Working with a natural, unstiched pitch presents significant challenges-especially in the UK climate. Limited drainage, heavy usage and exposure to the elements make winter a particularly demanding period.
“Like most groundsmen, winter is the biggest challenge,” Robson says. “But here, it’s even more so because of the number of games and the shaded areas on the pitch.”
Despite these challenges, improvements have been made. Minor drainage work and the introduction of grow lights have helped maintain strong grass coverage. Combined with a relatively kind season weather-wise, conditions have been more manageable but the underlying challenges remain.
Robson and his team currently operate a fleet that includes two Dennis G860 cylinder mowers and two Dennis Pro 34R rotary mowers at the stadium. Each machine plays a critical role in maintaining pitch quality.
The G860 stands out for its versatility, thanks to interchangeable cassettes. This allows seamless transitions between cutting, verticutting and brushing at the Pirelli Stadium. - essential for maintaining surface consistency throughout the season.
The Pro 34R rotaries have been transformative. “The speed across the pitch and the quality of cleanup is just different,” Robson explains. “They’ve helped us massively after games, just resetting the pitch quickly and effectively.”
This efficiency is crucial in a high-use environment, where turnaround times between matches are tight. The ability to adapt- whether performing a quick clean-up or a more detailed finish gives the team a significant advantage.
Recognising their value, the club plans to fully refresh its fleet at the end of the season, bringing in new G860s and Pro R34s to ensure continued reliability.

Robson’s confidence in Dennis isn’t unique- it reflects a broader industry trend. Across football and wider turf management, the brand is widely regarded as a benchmark.
“It’s rare to go somewhere that doesn’t use Dennis,” he says. “And when you do, it raises questions straight away.”
While he acknowledges the importance of comparison, Robson remains unconvinced that any competitor matches the performance and consistency he’s experienced.
With ongoing improvements to pitch infrastructure and continued investment in world class machinery, Robson is optimistic about the future. Yet his approach remains grounded in experience: trust proven tools, adapt to conditions and never compromise on quality. For him, the formula is simple and it’s one that’s served him well for nearly 20 years. “Unless something can truly challenge Dennis,” he says, “it’ll be Dennis forever.”
