Around 20 grounds staff from Staffordshire clubs and beyond gathered last month at Howardson Group’s new Unit 1 facility for a day of learning, networking and a behind-the-scenes tour of the Dennis and SISIS production lines. Organised in partnership with STAG (Staffordshire Association of Grounds People – Staffordshire Cricket), the event brought together industry experts and grassroots volunteers to share knowledge, explore the latest turf technology and gain insight into equipment care.

The day began with a theory session led by Andy Welsby, Regional Pitch Advisor from the Grounds Management Association (GMA) and Paul Clarke, Staffordshire County Pitch Advisor. Their workshop focused on renovating cricket squares post-season, offering practical guidance to deliver high-quality pitches that meet the demands of modern cricket.
Andy Welsby commented:
“Renovation is one of the most important maintenance practices for a cricket square. It lays the foundations for quality pitches in the following season, giving grounds teams the best chance of success. Events like this are a fantastic way to reinforce those messages, allow people to ask questions and learn from each other’s experience.”

Attendees then toured the Dennis and SISIS production facilities and All British Precision, where the majority of parts are manufactured in-house. The visit showcased the precision engineering and craftsmanship behind British-made equipment and highlighted Howardson Group’s commitment to local supply chains and long-term quality.
The practical element of the day included a Hunter Grinder workshop from David Mitchinson, demonstrating how regular cylinder sharpening and annual grinding can enhance performance and extend machine life. This was followed by Alan Thomson, UK Sales Manager for SIS Pitches, who presented the benefits of hybrid turf for grassroots clubs.

Alan Thomson said:
“For me the biggest takeaway is being able to deliver education on hybrid cricket wickets to a wide audience. Many club groundsmen are volunteers and if we can share knowledge that helps them make improvements, it’s a big step forward. The system we use at grassroots level is the exact same one that’s installed at top venues, so accessibility is key, everyone deserves the chance to play on a quality surface.”.

The grassroots perspective came from Richard Marcer, Club Development Officer at STAG:
“Events like this are invaluable. They bring people together to share ideas and experiences, which strengthens STAG and encourages more participation. With the growing demands on grounds staff, especially volunteers, it’s vital we support them with the right knowledge and equipment. Better renovations lead to better pitches and ultimately better cricket. One of our attendees summed it up perfectly, at 77 years old he said, ‘you’re never too old to pick up new ideas.’ That spirit of learning and community is exactly what STAG is all about.”
Darren McMahon, Head of Marketing at Howardson Group, added:
“It’s always fantastic to welcome grounds people to our facilities and show them how our machinery is designed and built to the highest standards. These events are perfect for sharing knowledge, inspiring innovation and supporting the professionals and volunteers who keep cricket pitches and sports fields at their best.”
The event underlined the importance of collaboration, continuous development and long-term improvements within the groundskeeping community. Attendees left with fresh ideas, practical skills and renewed confidence to apply at their clubs. Howardson Group takes pride in supporting not only the professional game, but also the grassroots volunteers and community clubs who form the beating heart of British sport.
